Animal Research

The class is continuing their research in class on their selected animal. As a reminder, the research fact sheet is due this Friday and the completed project is due April 7th. Attached to the students' research packet is a rubric for their animal project. I will also send home a rubric in Wednesday envelopes. As they finish their research packets, I will allow students to bring their packet home to begin their final project. (A star on the top of their packet means I have checked in with them and they are ready to start their final project at home.) If you have any questions about this project feel free to call or email!

Chocolate Party

We will be having a chocolate party Friday afternoon! The class will be enjoying “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.  We are excited to view this movie so we can compare and contrast it from the Roald Dahl book we read, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.  Each child may bring a chocolate treat for the party or if your child does not care for chocolate, a different type of treat will be just fine.  It should be a sweet time!

Animal Research Project

We started a new unit this week in science.... Animals! As part of our study, each child will need to create a project about an animal. The project will begin in class with each student choosing an animal. Next, they will research their animal using a Research Fact Sheet. This will be due Friday, March 27th. They will be given time at school to research their animal (at the library and on the I-Pads). They will use the information gathered to create some type of display about the animal. The students will be presenting their final projects to the class. The final project will be due Tuesday, April 7th.

I will be sending home more information about this project in Wednesday envelopes.

Guided Reading

For the next couple weeks, we will be working with the skill summarizing. When we summarize we determine the most important details in the story to help us retell what we have read. You will see sheets coming home in their book bags that work with this skill. I will make a note on top if it is homework, otherwise we will work on it during group. :)

Writing

In writing your child continues to work on writing a persuasive letter or letters.  Persuasive letters:
¨ Have a specific audience
¨ Use strong, powerful words
¨ State arguments or reasons why
¨ Often include facts
¨ Identify a Problem and Solution

Box Tops

Keep collecting box tops!  Our school still needs a lot more box tops collected in order to reach our school wide goal.

Word of the Month

Friendly-having or showing the warmness of a friend
Just a reminder that if your child is keeping a larger quantity of snack(s) in his/her locker to please have your child keep all of his/her snacks inside of a sealed plastic container to prevent any unwanted critters within their snack(s)!

Just Right Books

I always remind students to do the five finger test when determining if a book is just right for him/her.  If your child opens a book and he/she is not able to read five or more words on any page, then that particular book is too difficult for your child at the present time.

Read, Read, Read

February was a very important month for demonstrating the importance of reading.  Just because “I Love to Read” month is over still encourage your child to spend time reading every night!
