Library Books

All library books will be due May 21st!

Field Trip Info and Volunteer Training

We will be taking a class field trip to the Como Zoo on Tuesday, May 19th! A detailed note with specific information will be sent home in Wednesday Envelopes this week. 

If you would like to chaperone for this field trip we would love to have you! Simply return the bottom portion of the field trip slip and check the box stating you will be able to chaperone. There will also be a mandatory Volunteer Training on May 12th from 6:00-6:30 in the Elementary Media Center. (This training includes a quick video, paperwork and your picture will be taken.)

Phonics

This week and next week in phonics we will be focusing on prefixes.

Students will:

  • Read words with the prefix re- and un-
  • Understand that adding the prefix re- or un- changes the word's meaning
  • Make new words from selected base words by adding the prefix re- and un-
  • Spell word with the prefix re- and un- (unclean, repay, regroup)

Phonics

Topics we are covering this week:
  • Read words with -ly ending
  • Understand that adding -ly to a base word changes the word's meaning 
  • Review plurals 
  • Sort words according to their meaning
  • Spell words with -ly endings: closely, friendly, gloomily, angrily, quietly, safely

Guided Reading Groups

This week during our guided reading groups we will be practicing our Reader's Theater scripts. The students will preform their scripts this Friday. Practice reading with expression and fluency!

Animal Projects Update

I was blown away by the creativity and hard work put into the animal projects. I could tell how much hard work was put into each one. FABULOUS JOB! :)

Writing

Our class is beginning a Writer's Workshop unit on Procedural Texts. Procedural texts tell how to make or do something (Example: How to Make Grilled Cheese). Procedural texts include:

  • A title
  • An introduction
  • Bulleted list of supplies/materials needed
  • Directions or steps that explain the procedure
  • A helpful tip
  • Drawings or photos that show the steps of the process

Animal Projects Due Tomorrow

Just a reminder, Animal Projects are due tomorrow. Quite a few were turned in early today and I am VERY impressed at the projects I have seen. I cannot wait to see all of the projects during our presentations this week!
