Well it is appears that the weather is getting a little bit cooler outside... Unfortunately, it gets dark earlier and we find ourselves confined inside the house much more often. Sure, we have our cold weather activities like sledding, building snow men, skiing/snowboarding, ice skating and even snow shoeing, but what do we do between now and when it really gets cold outside???
Whip/Nae Nae!!! If you are not familiar with the Whip/Nae Nae, it is a song that became popular this past summer and has become an even more popular dance. The following link is not our school and it is not me dancing, although I am working on my dance moves, but is a great example of what we can do inside with our friends or family to get some exercise. This video was put together by Jared Paschall, teacher and coach at Harvest Elementary School in Harvest, Alabama. Take a look and get movin'!!!! Whip/Nae Nae Video |

Math Problem of the Week
Sandy learned 6 math facts yesterday. Today she is studying 6 more. How many math facts will Sandy know altogether?
Math
Please spend time practicing with your child as often as you can basic addition facts such as: 7+7, 6+4, 3+7, etc. Being able to solve basic math facts quickly is an important part of second grade math. Using flashcards or shaking a pair of dice are great ways to reinforce these basic facts. Also counting money and telling time are additional areas you can work on at home with your child.
Box Tops
Keep collecting those box tops! Our school makes a substantial amount of money just by collecting box tops! Some of the money that our school makes from collecting box tops is used to purchase additional items for individual classrooms. Be sure to ask friends and family to collect box tops for our school as well!
Boxes
Our class is collecting any sizes of boxes that you may have at home that have a lid or cover. If you have any boxes that you no longer want or need at home please send them to school with your child. Thanks in advance!
Guided Reading
Guided Reading is going very well within our classroom. Please make sure your child is spending time every night reading one of their guided reading books that are sent home in their book bag. The most important thing to remember about guided reading is that your child is reading books at his/her own level! Please also remember to sign your child's yellow reading sheet every night that your child reads.
Writing
This week in writing your child learned about adverbs that end with ly. An adverb is a word that tells when, where, or how something is done. As your child continues to work on his/her personal narrative, they will be encouraged to use some adverbs within their story.

Guided Reading
Please spend time reading with your child every night the book that I send home in your child's book bag. As you read with your child be sure to sign the yellow sheet that is located in your child’s book bag. This sheet will help keep you informed as to what your child needs to read. Your child's book bag should be brought home and brought back to school every day! Thanks for helping to promote additional reading at home!
Math
All three math classes continue to work on being able to read, write, and make connections between numbers all the way up to 1000. Students have been asked questions such as: what is 10 more than 875, what is 100 more than 760, what number comes before 999, etc. At home keep practicing addition math facts with your child!
Writing
In writing your child worked on writing sentences using sequencing words such as first, next, last, etc. For the next several weeks your child will continue to work on writing his/her own personal narrative which is a story about them.
