The air is indeed dry and lips are cracking.  Please send along to school with your child a tube of Chap Stick, Vaseline, or Carmex for your child to keep in his or her desk or locker.


Math

Use a clock at home and ask your child the following questions:
¨ What time is the clock showing right now?
¨ What time will it be 10 minutes from now?
¨ What time will it be in one hour?
¨ What time was it five minutes ago?
¨ What time will it be in 15 minutes?
¨ What time was it one hour ago?
¨ What time was it 30 minutes ago?


Guided Reading

This week all guided reading groups worked on fluency and expression by reading a Reader’s Theater script in groups.


Phonics

In phonics this week your child worked with contractions.  Your child also sorted high-frequency words and your child looked for contractions found within various reading passages.


Spelling

Next weeks spelling focus is working with root words and then making them plural by adding s, es, or changing the y to an i and then adding es as in:
tax-taxes
acorn-acorns
city-cities


CAFE Strategy: Tune Into Interesting Words

This week your child worked on expanding his/her vocabulary by learning new words and their meanings.  As we read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" this week, your child added new words to his/her spelling dictionary such as: glistening, ordinary, and smoothing.  Research states that a child must have multiple exposures to a word in order for it to become a part of his/her vocabulary.

Writing

In writing this week your child worked on writing sentences of different lengths within their informational report.  Our class also talked about how to create a strong ending to their report as well.

I Love to Read Month

All this week your child participated in DEAR(Drop Everything and Read) to go along with I Love to Read Month.  Your child also got to participate in a drawing lesson that was taught by a previous third grade teacher to go along with their Super Power.  If your child has not shared what his/her Super Power is be sure to ask them.

Presidential Power Point Presentations

Next Wednesday, February 17th, your child will be sharing his/her president power point that he/she has researched and designed.  Presentations will start at 1:45 in our classroom.  Hope you are able to come watch your child present!

Math

In math students have been working on mental addition and subtraction problems and rounding to the nearest ten and hundred.  Coming up students will begin working on solving double digit addition and subtraction problems with and without borrowing and carrying.

Next weeks spelling focus is working with words that have the letter patterns aw, a, and o within them as in claw, small, and boss.

Guided Reading

Please spend time listening to your child read every night and be sure to ask your child about what he/she is reading.  Yellow reading sheets should be signed each night stating how many minutes your child has read.  Thanks for helping your child grow as a reader at home!

Book Its

The Book It certificates that students receive throughout the year can be used at any Pizza Hut or the Monticello Movie Theater will honor the certificates towards one free movie admission.  Just be sure to use the certificate within 30 days of it being issued!

Informational Reports

This week in writing your child continued to learn more about what writing features can be included within an Informational Report such as a strong opening sentence which can often be a question, information written in a sequential way, and the use of maps, charts, and graphs.
