Fun in March
March has been a great month at MLE! We hosted our second annual Arts
and Academics Night and it was a huge success๐จ๐. We wrapped up our
bowling unit and even learned how to keep score ๐ณ... We even challenged
ourselves with some exergaming(exercise with video games) by playing
"Just Dance 4"๐ฎ๐ถ๐ญ! Needless to say it has been quite exciting in the
hallways and gymnasium. The common denominator is they are all lifetime
recreation activities that can be done at home with friends and family. Recreation or "play" can take place anywhere, but school has been, and
will continue to be, a great place to be introduced to such activities. Not only are the activities active and fun, they are also a great way
to gain and enhance social/interpersonal skills. Here are a few pics of
the fun that has been taking place.
Spring break is nearly upon us and it is a great time to recharge the batteries for the stretch run of the school year. Play some cards, visit friends and family, and be active for 60 minutes a day! Have a great break!!

Use Pictures, Illustrations, and Diagrams
Your child has also been taught that readers can expand their vocabulary by paying attention to pictures, illustrations, and diagrams throughout a text. Your child has been using illustrations to help provide clues about the meaning of unknown words.

Cafe Strategy
To improve in reading, a student must have increased exposure and practice to new words. This week your child continued to work on his/her reading accuracy by blending, stretching, and rereading words.
Arts and Academics Night
A huge thank you to all of the families who came out and participated in the Arts and Activities Family Night. It was great to see so many families present at the family event. To those families who donated to our classroom basket, a big thank you goes out to you as well. With the money raised from the silent auction, more books will be purchased for our guided reading bookroom. The students were talking about the evening to many of their friends the next day. This evening was another huge success thanks to all of you!!!!

We are officially wrapping up our Jump Rope for Heart campaign and it has been another productive year to say the least. From talking about how the heart works, to identifying ways we can reduce heart disease, and recognizing signs and symptoms of a heart attack; we covered a ton of material that can lead us down the heart healthy path. In addition to learning, we also collected over $3,500 in donations for the American Heart Association. A huge "Thank You" to all the students who participated (approximately 40) and the families and friends who donated.

Just Right Books
I always remind students to do the five finger test when determining if a book is just right for him/her. If your child opens a book and he/she is not able to read five or more words on any page, then that particular book is too difficult for your child at the present time. Keep reading books at home!!!!
Writing
This week in writing your child started to learn about a new genre of writing called Persuasive Letter Writing. Your child listened to several stories and then gave specific examples/reasons as to why something should or should not be.
Social
If your child has not brought in 5 objects for Mr. Hammerschmidt's social assignment please do so as soon as possible.
Item 1 should be something from their grandparent's childhood.
Item 2 should be something from their parent's childhood.
Item 3 should be something from their parent's school days.
Item 4 should be something special about their home.
Item 5 should be something that is a favorite of your child's.

Bring on Spring!
Hello All!
Although the unseasonably warm weather we experienced a few weeks ago seems like it was ages ago, the drastic rise in temperatures got me VERY inspired for the Spring season and what it will look like in the music room this year!
Take a look at what is coming up!

As 2nd grade continues to grow in their music terminology and
experiences, we will start exploring the incredible connecting power of
Folk Dancing. Students already know a few folk dances but March is a
month that I really begin to introduce students to some amazing and
entertaining folk dances.
Last year, we had the privilege of Mr. Hammerschimdt accompanying us on guitar and we hope to invite him again!
Stay tuned for videos of the joyous dances and the smile that it puts on each students face!

Cafe Strategy
Make a Picture or Mental Image
This week your child used a whiteboard to draw important details from the story "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" as I read it aloud. Making a picture or mental image helps readers understand what has been read by allowing the student to create images in their mind based on the details in the text and based off of the child's prior knowledge.

Math
In math your child is working on regrouping as he/she subtracts two-digit numbers. As students work through multiple subtraction problems, they will need to remember their subtraction strategies so they are able to quickly work through each problem.
Snack Reminder
Just a reminder that if your child is keeping a larger quantity of snack(s) in his/her locker to please have your child keep all of his/her snacks inside of a sealed plastic container to prevent any unwanted critters within their snack(s)! Please ask your child weekly if his/her snack supply needs to be replenished for the week. Several students are coming without a snack on a daily basis.
Phonics
In phonics your child worked with words that ended with ing or ed. Throughout the week your child spelled, sorted, and read words with the above two endings.
