Phonics
In phonics your child worked with words that ended with ing or ed. Throughout the week your child spelled, sorted, and read words with the above two endings.
Guided Reading
In guided reading this week students have been working on making inferences. An inference means figuring out something that is not directly stated within a text. Inferences are often made based off of one or more clues from within a text. When reading texts, authors don't always tell readers everything but they include clues that readers can put together for themselves. Making inferences helps readers better understand the ideas within a text.

Ask Questions Throughout the Reading Process
Good readers continually ask themselves questions before, during, and after reading a selection. Asking questions increases a child's comprehension while keeping them engaged while reading. When reading with your child ask questions such as:
- What does this mean?
- Is this important?
- How do you think the story will end?
- What does this word mean?
- Do you need to read it again?

Just Right Books
I always remind students to do the five finger test when determining if a book is just right for him/her. If your child opens a book and he/she is not able to read five or more words on any page, then that particular book is too difficult for your child at the present time.
Dry Lips & Hands
The air is STILL indeed dry and lips are cracking. Please send along to school with your child a tube of Chap Stick, Vaseline, or Carmex for your child to keep in his or her desk or locker and maybe even a small bottle of hand lotion.

In math students have been working on mental addition and subtraction problems. Coming up students will begin working on solving double digit addition problems with and without regrouping.
