Phonics
In phonics this week your child worked on adding the prefix re to the beginning of base words. Your child learned that when the prefix re is added to the beginning of a word it changes the meaning of that word to mean to do over again or redo.
Science
In science your child is learning about various characteristics that are associated with Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish, Insects, and Spiders. This science unit ties into our end of the year field trip to the Como Zoo on Monday, June 3rd.

Field Trip
I have had a few parents ask when the second grade field trip is. Second grade will go to the Como Zoo on Monday, June 3rd.
Technology
In technology this week with Mr. Mavencamp, students worked on coding. Using markers and specific codes, students completed a code sheet and then used an Ozobot to follow their code. Students were excited, engaged, and very creative during this lesson and many even asked where they could get their own Ozobot. Feel free to check out the following website: ozobot.com

Wear Blue on Fridays
Throughout the month of April your child is encouraged to wear blue every Friday in support of Autism Awareness Month.
Guided Reading
Your child is becoming a very fluent reader. Please continue to spend time reading with your child his/her guided reading book that is sent home with your child every night. If you are unsure of what your child needs to read each night, please refer to your child's yellow reading sheet that is in his/her book bag. Your child has made some big gains in guided reading and we want him/her to continue to advance and take their reading to an even higher level. Please remember to do some type of math practice each night as well and sign the bottom math portion of your child's yellow reading sheet.
Box Tops
Keep collecting Box Tops! Ask friends and family members to collect them for you as well. Our school is able to purchase many additional things for individual classrooms and for our school using the money earned from Box Tops!

Give your child a chance to answer riddles such as:

Writing
In writing students are working on "How To's". Choosing something that
they can teach to someone and writing the step-by-step directions on how
to do it.
Science
In science your child is learning about weather and the different weather tools that can be used to measure weather. Ask your child about some of the weather tools he/she has learned about or made in science.
