Cafe Strategy

This week your child worked with the story The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza to make predictions. to summarize, and to identify compound words throughout the story.

Phonics

In phonics your child worked with words that ended with ing or ed. Throughout the week your child spelled, sorted, and read words with the above two endings.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading students spent time working on the reading skill of summarizing. When summarizing students should tell what happened in their own words using details from the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

Phonics

This week in phonics students worked with irregular plurals. Sometimes students have to change the spelling of a singular word to make it plural such as man-men. Other words require no change in spelling when going from singular to plural such as deer-deer.

Just Right Books

I always remind students to do the five finger test when determining if a book is just right for him/her. If your child opens a book and he/she is not able to read five or more words on any page, then that particular book is too difficult for your child at the present time.

Word of the Month

Responsibility- Being helpful to others and being accountable for your own actions

Guided Reading

This week all guided reading groups worked on fluency and expression by reading a Reader’s Theater script in groups.

Animal Picture

We are asking each student to bring in a picture of their pet or a picture of their favorite animal by Monday, February 24th. These pictures will be used to go along with the word of the month, RESPONSIBILITY.

Basket Donations

Our PTA is having a Bingo and Pizza Night on Thursday, February 27th. To go along with this evening each grade level is collecting items for a basket to be put together and raffled off. The theme for Second Grade is SUMMER FUN. If you are able to donate an item to go along with this theme please do so by Monday, February 24th. Thanks in advance!

Battle of the Books

The 2nd and 3rd grade Battle of the Books is rescheduled for next Thursday the 20th at the same times. 2nd grade will start at 8:20 next Thursday!

Chapstick

The air is indeed dry and lips are cracking. Please send to school with your child some chapstick and lotion for your child to keep in their desk or locker.

Use a clock at home and ask your child the following questions:
