Good Readers...
This week during Daily Five our class revisited some CAFE strategies to help students become even better readers such as:
- Good readers use pictures, graphs, and charts to figure out unknown words.
- Good readers reread.
- Good readers look for known chunks within words.
- Good readers make predictions before, during, and after reading a text.
Writing
This week in writing your child started working on the steps needed to write a Personal Narrative. A Personal Narrative is a true story about something that has happened in life. The main focus this week was brainstorming a list of topics and then narrowing down those topics to one idea to write about.

Irish Store
This week your child got the opportunity to go to our new Irish Store. Students had a tough decision to make; use their shamrock tickets now for a prize on Tier 1 or save their shamrock tickets to add onto next months total to get a bigger prize from Tier 2, 3, and 4. Great lessons were learned this week on how sometimes we need to keep saving in order to get something bigger that we may want. Ask your child what he/she might be saving up for!
Warm Clothes
The weather changed quickly this week. Please make sure your child is bringing sweatshirts and jackets to school for those chillier days.
Phonics
In phonics your child worked with words that had the long o sound within them as in boat, show, and toe. We spent a lot of time focusing on the letter patterns oa, oe, and ow within words.
Book Orders
Please be patient as we patiently await for our Scholastic Book order box to arrive. Like everything right now, Scholastic is experiencing shipping delays. Hopefully the books will arrive soon!

Planners
Thank you for looking at and signing your child's planner every night. This is a great way for home/school communication. If there is ever a time that you would like to ask me something or you think I should know about something, write it in your child’s planner. I check everyone's planner each morning.
Bookbags
Bookbags are just starting to come home this week. We are still practicing what it looks like to sign, read, and return bookbags daily so your child may have the same book in his/her bookbag for several days. If this happens have your child read the same book again to work on fluency or choose a book from home to have your child read. Once I get through all reading groups bookbags should be coming home almost every other day with a new book in it to read. Please make sure to sign your child's yellow reading sheet daily and also have your child do some type of math each night and write it on the yellow reading sheet as well. Some math ideas include: Prodigy, Sumdog, flashcards, shake dice, play a math game, do a math sheet, etc.
App Practice
In class your child has been using the following apps to help them practice additional math skills and their spelling words. Your child is able to get to these apps through Clever which is taped inside their planner. The apps your child have been working with are:
- Prodigy
- Sumdog
- Spelling City
