Writing
This week in writing students shared their Personal Narrative story they wrote with the class. Coming up students will spend time learning more about:
- Proper Nouns
- Adverbs ending in ly

- Using Commas in a Series
Spelling
The spelling focus for week 15 is working with words that have the oo sound within them which can be spelled with either an oo or u. Please have your child sort his/her spelling words into 2 columns. Those words that have oo within them and those words that have u within them.

Word of the Month
The word of the month for December is TEAMWORK. This week students did a teamwork activity in which they had to work as a team to write a word by only grabbing three pieces of string that were tied to a marker. Lots of collaboration and communication was needed in order for each team to be successful with this activity!
Writing
This week in writing your child worked on editing their Personal Narrative. The next step in the writing process is for your child to turn their Personal Narrative into a finished story with pictures and a title page. Students will then share their stories next week with the rest of the class. It has been so fun to watch the writers within our classroom emerge!

Read-a-Thon
On Thursday, December 22nd our classroom will be having a read-a-thon in the morning. The read-a-thon will last for one hour and your child may bring in books from home to read, your child may choose books from within our classroom to read, or your child may choose to read books that he/she has checked out from the library. Everyone within our classroom will be reading the entire time including myself. Every fifteen minutes the entire class will stop with what they are reading and students will have the opportunity to give a book talk on the book they are reading. With Christmas right around the corner the excitement level is rising within our classroom. Your child has worked extremely hard already this year in his/her guided reading group. This read– a-thon will be a nice, relaxing way for your child to relax and enjoy reading some of his/her favorite books before going into Christmas vacation. If your child chooses he/she may bring in a healthy snack and/or a beverage to enjoy during the read-a-thon.
Dry Air
The air is dry indeed. Several students have come to me with chapped lips or dry hands. If able please send to school with your child a small bottle of hand lotion and some chapstick for them to keep in their locker.

Battle of the Books
This week your child was introduced to what the Battle of the Books is. Students are not required to participate in this competition, but I would love to see many of my students participate. App Practice
In class your child has been using the following apps to help them practice additional math skills and their spelling words. Your child is able to get to these apps through Clever which is taped inside their planner. The apps your child have been working with are:

Guided Reading Bookbags
We are in full swing with guided reading bookbags. If your child has the same book for several days in a row in their bookbag, your child can reread the book to work on fluency or your child can choose a book from home to read. Please make sure to sign your child's yellow reading sheet daily and also have your child do some type of math each night and write that on their reading sheet as well. Some math ideas include: Prodigy, Sumdog, Happy Numbers, flashcards, shake dice, play a math game, or do a math sheet.
Planners
Thank you for looking at and signing your child's planner every night. This is a great way for home/school communication. If there is ever a time that you would like to ask me something or you think I should know about something, write it in your child's planner. I check planners each morning.
Reading
All this week during whole group reading instruction and small group reading instruction our class worked on identifying the main idea and supporting details to go along with various texts. Next week we will continue with these skills.

Good Readers...
This week our class revisited some CAFE strategies to help students
become even better readers such as:

Fall Celebration
We will be having a Fall Celebration in our classroom on Monday, Oct. 31st. If students choose, they may bring a costume along to school to change into. Costumes are optional. Some students have asked about bringing a treat to school that day to share with the class. Students may bring treats to school to share with the class as long as the treats are store bought. We have 22 students in our classroom!

A Big Thank You
I just wanted to send a big thank you out to all of you for your understanding, patience, and kind thoughts the past few weeks. My son Brockdan is home from the hospital and he is doing very well. He was excited to go back to school as was I to see all of the kiddos. They rocked it while I was gone and I couldn't be more proud of them! Here's to calmer days ahead!!

Math
Time this week in math was spent practicing addition facts using a variety of strategies such as making ten facts, turn around facts, doubles, doubles +1, etc. Continue to use flashcards, dice, a deck of cards, or play games at home to help your child continue to learn their addition facts fluently.
Phonics
In phonics this week your child worked with words that had a long vowel-consonant-silent e pattern within them as in cake, tape, and made.
Bus Safety
Time was spent this week talking about bus safety and the importance of being safe and respectful when near or on a bus.

- We will go to the library every Friday.

The Last Week of School
Next week we have a very busy week with lots of fun things planned to finish off the school year.
Monday, May 30th- No School
Tuesday, May 31st- Your child is encouraged to bring a beach towel to school. Many activities planned for Tuesday will take place outside enjoying the sun!
Wednesday, June 1st- Please have your child bring their favorite book(s) to enjoy reading outside.
Thursday, June 2nd- Field Trip to Hemker Zoo. Please make sure your child brings a lunch that can be thrown away when finished. Please also put sunscreen on your child the day of the field trip and dress for the weather. It should be an amazing day at the zoo!
Friday, June 3rd- The last day of Second Grade! Please have your child bring a board game for the morning. In the afternoon your child will be walking to the City Park. Please put sunscreen on your child and send an extra water bottle to school with them.
