Writing
Students continue to work on their Realistic Fiction stories in writing. This week students worked on leading up to the problem with details in their story. Their favorite so far is including ONOMATOPOEIA words such as Screech! Ouch! Ring, Ring!

Rise & Read
February is I Love to Read month and we have many fun activities planned all throughout the month. To kick off the month and get students excited about reading we are having a Rise & Read event on Feb. 1st. For those families that turned in their Rise and Read form we are looking forward to seeing you on Feb. 1st to enjoy a doughnut while reading!

Spelling Focus
Next weeks spelling focus is working with words that have the letter patterns aw, a, and o within them as in claw, small, and boss.

Rise and Read
To kick off I Love to Read month we are inviting students and their families to come read before school on Tuesday, February 1st. If you and your child(children) plan to attend this event please return 1 Rise and Read form for your entire family by Monday, January 24th.
Reading
In reading this week your child Analyzed Story Elements by focusing on:
- Characters
- Setting
- Problem & Solution
- What happened at the beginning, middle, and end of a story?
- The Main Idea
Math
In math this week your child:
- Used base-ten blocks to model adding together 2-digit numbers
- Broke apart 2-digit numbers into tens and ones known as partial sums
- Added 2-digit numbers using mental math and partial sums(tens and ones)

Word of the Month
The word of the month for January is RESPONSIBILITY.
Responsibility means being helpful to others and being held accountable for your own actions. Ask your child how he/she shows responsibility at home and at school.
Spelling Focus
Next weeks spelling focus is working with words that have the oo sound within them which can be spelled with either an oo or u. Please have your child sort his/her spelling words into 2 columns. Those words that have oo within them and those words that have u within them.

Happy New Year
Happy New Year and welcome back! It was so fun to hear about all of the fun students had over holiday break. The students are refreshed and ready to continue to work hard toward the finish line. I must say, it sure is great to see their smiles again!
Writing
This week in writing your child began learning about what is needed to write a Realistic Fiction story. The first step in the writing process is brainstorming and coming up with characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution to include within their story. Realistic Fiction stories have real characters and settings but the story is not real.

Math
In math students are beginning to learn multiple strategies to solve double digit addition problems. Keep telling time, counting money, and practicing math facts at home with your child.
Reading
In reading your child has been working on sequencing. Using graphic organizers, signal words such as first, then, next, finally, and using pictures your child has taken several stories and put them in order. If your child is in the Battle of the Books encourage them to keep reading away. The battle is approaching soon!
Winter Clothing
Please remember to send warm clothes with your child to wear outside during recess including socks, boots, gloves, a hat, and snowpants. Students go outside in the morning for morning movers and at recess time.
