In math students continue to work on counting coins and making change up to $1.00. Students will also start practicing telling time to the hour, to the five minute, and to the minute. Please continue to practice these math skills with your child at home as well.
Writing
In writing this week your child worked on coming up with a strong and powerful introduction to their Personal Narrative and your child started writing their rough draft. As a class we talked about how a Personal Narrative could start with a:

Spelling
The spelling focus for next week is working with words that have ear, ir, and ur within them. As your child studies his/her words, draw attention to the e, i, and u r-controlled letter patterns within each of their words. Next week is a shorter week so have your child practice these words early. The spelling test will be on Wednesday of next week.
Math
In math students are beginning to work on counting coins up to $1.00 and beyond. At home grab some change and have your child count money and make change.

Writing
In writing this week students began learning about what a Personal Narrative is. This week students brainstormed a list of topics to write about, students selected a topic and came up with details to go along with their topic, and students developed a writing plan focused around events to go with their topic such as First, Then, Next, and Last.

Battle of the Books
This week your child was introduced to what the Battle of the Books is. Students are not required to participate in this competition, but I would love to see many of my students participate. If your child is going to participate in the Battle of the Books be sure to send back to school the signed permission slip along with who his/her partner will be. Happy Reading!
Guided Reading
This week in Guided Reading your child spent time identifying the main idea and details within various stories. Please make sure to sign your child's yellow reading sheet each night once math and reading has been completed.
Winter Gear
The chilliness has arrived in the air. Please make sure to send warm clothes to school with your child to wear outside during recess including hats & gloves.

App Practice
In class your child has been using the following apps to help them practice additional math skills and their spelling words. Your child is able to get to these apps through Clever which is taped inside their planner. The apps your child have been working with are:

- Sumdog
- Happy Numbers
- Spelling City
Guided Reading Bookbags
We are in full swing with guided reading bookbags. If your child has the same book for several days in a row in their bookbag, your child can reread the book to work on fluency or your child can choose a book from home to read. Please make sure to sign your child's yellow reading sheet daily and also have your child do some type of math each night and write that on their reading sheet as well. Some math ideas include: Prodigy, Sumdog, Happy Numbers, flashcards, shake dice, play a math game, or do a math sheet.
Planners
Thank you for looking at and signing your child's planner every night. This is a great way for home/school communication. If there is ever a time that you would like to ask me something or you think I should know about something, write it in your child's planner. I check planners each morning.
Reading
All this week during whole group reading instruction and small group reading instruction our class worked on identifying the main idea and supporting details to go along with various texts. Next week we will continue with these skills.
