Thank you for a spectacular year! I will miss your child so much. Your child has made a huge impact on me and your child is so special and unique in his/her own way. Next Wednesday, May 31st our class will be watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to go along with our class read aloud. On this day your child may bring in a chocolate treat to enjoy, a special drink, a stuffed animal, and a blanket if they choose.

May Word of the Month

Track & Field Day Reminders
- The weather looks on the chillier side for Friday so please have your child dress in layers and wear blue if possible.
- Please send a water bottle or two along with your child.
- Please put sunscreen on your child before he/she leaves the house in the morning.
- Students are not allowed to leave the school grounds for lunch. You may bring in lunch if you like but students need to stay at school.
- At the end of the day please check in with me if you are taking your child home with you. Then go to the checkout table as well to sign your child out for the day.
Phonics
This week in phonics your child spent time working with the "Bossy R" within words as in ar, er, ir, or, and ur. Using these letter patterns your child made words, sorted words, and played a game focusing around the above letter patterns.
Writing
In writing students have been working on finishing the following story starters:

Happy Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms and special individuals who make a difference in the lives of these special students daily. Enjoy your special day!
Phonics
Math
In math students are working on adding and subtracting numbers up to 1,000. Students have been using open number lines, base-ten pieces, partial sums, and repeated reasoning to help them make sense of numbers. Encourage your child to keep practicing their addition and subtracting math facts. Weekly assessments will be given on facts!

It is so fun to see the students using expression, dressing up as their character in the play, and acting out their parts. Plays are definitely a fun way to wrap up May.
Field Trip
- If your child has not yet brought back their signed permission slip along with $21 for the Hemker Zoo field trip please do so as soon as possible.
- Chaperones are also able to join us on our field trip. The admission cost for chaperones to Hemker Zoo is $13 per person. If you will be joining us for the field trip please sign and return the chaperone permission slip along with $13 as soon as possible.

In reading this week students used a reader's theater script called The Tricky Garden to work on phrasing, dialogue, and to work with antonyms. This reader's theater was a favorite for many students. In May students will spend some time practicing and performing several different plays.

Writing
In writing this week students began the planning process for their Informational Report. Students made a chart focusing on what they already know, what they wonder, and what they want to learn about their topic. Students then began researching their topic, writing an introduction to their report, and collecting more facts for their report. Be watching for an invitation to be sent home later this month for you to come watch their presentations!
Word of the Month
Patience- Being calm and understanding that some things take time and endurance. All throughout the month of April we will do several team building activities as a class focused around patience and sticking to the task!
Guided Reading
All this week in guided reading students have been working on making predictions using picture and text clues. Students learned that a prediction is just like making a guess using what clues you know. Keep reminding your child to read nightly at home and to get their yellow reading sheet signed each night.

Informational Reports
This week in writing your child brainstormed a list of topics he/she could use to write an informational report on. Students then went to the library to check out a nonfiction book on their chosen topic so that your child can begin researching facts about their topic. Students are so excited to learn more about their chosen topic. They keep asking me when they can start writing?
Spring Break
Spring Break is upon us and it is a great time for your child to recharge for the last stretch of this school year. Whether you are traveling or enjoying some extra home time, encourage your child to play some games, read, and be active in some way. Have a well-deserved break and hopefully some needed sunshine and warmth will come our way soon. Mrs. Schneider is ready for flip flops!
