If your child would like to make a Valentine box at home they may. Otherwise, I will allow some time in class for students to decorate a bag.

Responsibility
The word of the month for the month of January is responsibility. We spent some time this week as a class discussing different ways to show being responsible at home, at school, and when other places. At the Irish Pride Celebration this week students also learned a new RESPONSIBILITY song. All throughout the month of January students will continue to practice ways to show responsibility.

Spelling test on Thursday of next week!
Math
At home continue to have your child practice his/her basic addition and subtraction math facts by using a deck of cards, dice, or flashcards. Fact fluency is so important by the end of second grade.
Writing
In writing this week time was spent learning about Proper Nouns. Next week your child will do a Snow Globe writing activity. Be watching for this writing project to be featured in the Maple Lake Messenger towards the end of January.
Guided Reading
In Guided Reading your child has been working on the reading skill of sequencing. Using signal words such as first, then, next, and after, your child has been listing series of events. The students have also enjoyed listening to Jack and the Beanstalk and The Polar Express and then doing a sequencing activity with both of these stories.
