Final Goodbye

Thank you for a spectacular year! I will miss your child so much. Your child has made a huge impact on me and your child is so special and unique in his/her own way. I hope everyone has an awesome summer with a ton of fun! I can't wait to see these amazing students walk down the hallway next year as 3rd graders! Keep shining your light onto others 2nd graders!

Upcoming Dates

 We are on the final stretch of school. Here are some dates of events for the last week of school.

Monday, May 29th- No School

Thursday, June 1st- Field Trip to Hemker Zoo, Students should wear their green Irish Pride shirts, bring a bagged lunch that can be thrown away, bring an extra water bottle or drink that can be thrown away, wear sunscreen

Friday, June 2nd- Last Day of 2nd Grade, Walking to City Park, Wear Sunscreen

Plays

Groups of students performed the following plays this week:

  • The Three Billy Goats Gruff
  • The Stinky Cheese Man

Writing

In writing this week your child finished the following story starters:

  • A Big Day at School
  • The Recess Mess
  • A Crazy Class

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Next Wednesday, May 31st our class will be watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to go along with our class read aloud. On this day your child may bring in a chocolate treat to enjoy, a special drink, a stuffed animal, and a blanket if they choose.

May Word of the Month

Courage- Be brave and dare to be nice even when it is hard

To go along with the word of the month students listened to the story: Be Brave Little One. Students continued to do several activities to go along with this story.

Guided Reading Books

Please have your child look one last time at home for any guided reading books that may need to be returned to school.

Track & Field Day Reminders

  • The weather looks on the chillier side for Friday so please have your child dress in layers and wear blue if possible.
  • Please send a water bottle or two along with your child.
  • Please put sunscreen on your child before he/she leaves the house in the morning.
  • Students are not allowed to leave the school grounds for lunch. You may bring in lunch if you like but students need to stay at school.
  • At the end of the day please check in with me if you are taking your child home with you. Then go to the checkout table as well to sign your child out for the day.
This is such a fun day for MLE students and I hope many of you are able to come and watch!

Phonics

This week in phonics your child spent time working with the "Bossy R" within words as in ar, er, ir, or, and urUsing these letter patterns your child made words, sorted words, and played a game focusing around the above letter patterns.

Writing

In writing students have been working on finishing the following story starters:

  • A Weird Wake-Up
  • Even Robots Need Breakfast
  • Monkey See, Monkey Do


Guided Reading

 This week the students practiced and performed the following plays:

  • A Pinch of Pepper

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms and special individuals who make a difference in the lives of these special students daily. Enjoy your special day!

Phonics

Time this week was spent in phonics working with Greek Roots. Students spent time taking words apart and finding the meaning of words using the known Greek Root parts.

Math

In math students are working on adding and subtracting numbers up to 1,000. Students have been using open number lines, base-ten pieces, partial sums, and repeated reasoning to help them make sense of numbers. Encourage your child to keep practicing their addition and subtracting math facts. Weekly assessments will be given on facts!

Spelling

Your child will not have any more weekly spelling tests starting next week. For the remainder of the school year your child will be working on many different review spelling activities throughout each week.

It is so fun to see the students using expression, dressing up as their character in the play, and acting out their parts. Plays are definitely a fun way to wrap up May.

Field Trip

  • If your child has not yet brought back their signed permission slip along with $21 for the Hemker Zoo field trip please do so as soon as possible.
  • Chaperones are also able to join us on our field trip. The admission cost for chaperones to Hemker Zoo is $13 per person. If you will be joining us for the field trip please sign and return the chaperone permission slip along with $13 as soon as possible.
