Fall Festival Celebration

On Monday, October 31st, some academics for the day will focus around Halloween/Fall.  If your child chooses, he/she may change into their Halloween costume in the afternoon.  Please note that having your child wear a costume is entirely up to you.  I just ask that school costumes be non-violent.  (A non-violent costume is a costume in which the character portrayed does not use physical or implied force in a way that harms or injures another person or his/her self).  Just a reminder that all candy brought to school must be store bought!  There are 21 students in our classroom.

Mrs. Hoselton's Music Blog Post

2nd Grade

2nd Grade has been working hard to review pitches, rhythms, and vocabulary from 1st grade concepts. So far, we have showed mastery of So/Mi pitch work, Ta/ti-ti rhythm work, quarter rests, and repeat signs.

2nd grade also started the year by being introduced to a brand new "long note" and a brand new "mystery" pitch.
Students began identifying our new "long note" in songs as we played, moved, danced, and sang. Soon student identified that the new note received TWO BEATS per note. This is twice as long as our quarter note from last year.

Students began using foam cards to identify rhythms clapped by me in class. They used the symbol of two quarter notes tied together (with a musical device called a "tie") to visually represent our new "Long Note".

Currently, students now know the musical term for our "Long Note" is Half note and it receives two beats of sound! Students can count and clap half note rhythms using a "ta-oh" counting syllable to represent our half note.

2nd grade has been working hard with flashcards, dictation cards, and SMARTboard activities to build, read, and create half note rhythms.

Most students are anxious to learn our new "mystery" pitch as we began identifying it in songs we are singing. Students can hear and identify our new mystery pitch by raising a hand or a thumb each time it is sang. We have discovered that it is higher than both So and Mi but lives closer to So in our voices as we sing each pattern.

Next week students will be learning the name, hand sign, and staff location of our new "mystery pitch"!

Stay tuned for videos and audio clips of students performing our newly named "mystery pitch"!

BONUS: Have students count and clap that following flashcards before bedtime. Then, challenge them by clapping each card silently and having them clap the same rhythm back using the proper counting syllables! Double Bonus: Have them write 2 - 3 NEW half note patterns to add to these!

Over the past few weeks we have been enjoying some great weather outside and playing catch.  Although the temps have been great the wind has sometimes affected our ability to be outside as we continually search for ways to be successful with our motor skills like throwing and catching.  We have used footballs, gatorskin balls, tennis balls, bean bags, and E-Z grab balls designed for easier catching.  Activities included:  toss and catch, centerpede, capture the bean bag, catch and switch, air it out, steal the ball, and many more.  Here are a few pictures of our second graders in the gym...

This week we plan to use the calm days for a little Frisbee exploration!  Have a great week!!

Math

In math students are continuing to work on being able to read, write, and represent numbers up to 1,000.  This week students continued to work on their math number sense by being able to identify numbers that were 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less when given a three digit number.  Students also compared numbers using the greater and less than symbols and students put three digit numbers in order from least to greatest.

Guided Reading Bookbags

Guided Reading bookbags will start coming home this week and next.  Please make sure your child reads the assigned book in his/her bookbag.  Please note that most of the time students will meet with me every other day for reading groups.  If your child has the same book in his/her bookbag for two nights please do a reread with that book.  If your child has the same book in his/her bookbag for more than two nights then just have your child select a book from home to read for enjoyment until your child gets a new book from school.  Every night that your child reads at home please initial the yellow reading sheet in your child's bookbag.

Mr. Ronnenberg's Blog

It was an exciting week in MLE PE!!  The mile run is an incredibly challenging week for students for a number of reasons.  First and foremost it creates some very real anxiety for kids.  Second, it is physically demanding and difficult.

The mile run is a cardio-respiratory endurance "test" (I like to think of it as a challenge), which means it is testing (challenging) the heart and lungs to see how well they work together.  Larger than that, this is a challenge that builds stamina, persistence, and teamwork.  We do our very best to help all students do their best and overcome the fear of this "test"(challenge).  At the end of the day, it is about finishing and proving to yourself you can do it even though it is difficult.

Check out our rainbow run pics as we prepared for the mile run!  The rainbow run was a team scavenger hunt to find each color while jogging from one spot to another.  (Our rainbow run tattoo was 100% washable:).

3rd-6th grade students took on the full mile run, while our K-2 groups did the 1/2 mile.  Thanks for persisting and making this past week great!!
